Our Core Offerings

Discover the differences and find your perfect fit.

What is the *real* difference between Bespoke and Made-to-Measure?

This is perhaps the most crucial question in tailoring, and the distinction is fundamental to our philosophy. While both services offer a personalized experience far superior to ready-to-wear, they are two distinct worlds of craftsmanship.

The Bespoke Experience is the absolute pinnacle of tailoring. Think of it as commissioning a piece of art. We start with nothing but you and a bolt of fabric. A unique pattern is hand-drafted from scratch based on over 30 of your individual measurements, as well as our detailed observations of your posture, stance, and body shape. Every single element is open to discussion and customization — from the width and height of the lapel gorge to the internal pocket configuration and the type of hand-stitching on the buttonholes. The process involves a series of 3-4 fittings (basted, forward, and fin bar fin) where the garment is deconstructed and reconstructed to achieve a perfect, three-dimensional fit. It's a collaborative journey that results in a garment that is unequivocally, uniquely yours.

Made-to-Measure (MTM) Precision is a more streamlined, yet still highly personalized, process. Instead of starting from a blank slate, we begin with our expertly refined "master patterns" or "blocks". We then meticulously alter this block to conform to your measurements. While the pattern isn't created from scratch, the adjustments are comprehensive. You still have a vast choice of fabrics, linings, buttons, and key style details like pocket types and vent options. The process is faster, typically requiring 1-2 fittings. It’s the perfect choice for a gentleman who needs a superb fit and high level of personalization with a more efficient turnaround and a more accessible price point.

How should I prepare for my first consultation?

Your first consultation is an exciting step, and a little preparation can make the experience even more productive and enjoyable. It's a collaborative conversation, not an examination, so the primary goal is for us to understand you and your needs. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Consider the Purpose: Think about where you'll be wearing the suit. Is it for a wedding in Goa, daily wear in a Mumbai boardroom, a black-tie gala, or international travel? The function of the suit is the most important factor in guiding our fabric and style recommendations.
  • Gather Inspiration (Optional): If you've seen styles you admire—in magazines, films, or online—feel free to bring photos. This gives us a great starting point to discuss what you like about them, whether it's the lapel shape, the silhouette, or the overall feeling. This is for inspiration only; our ultimate goal is to create something perfect for *you*, not just a copy.
  • Wear Well-Fitting Clothes: Try to wear a dress shirt and smart trousers to your appointment. This helps us see your natural posture and makes the initial measurement process more accurate. Avoid bulky clothing like heavy jeans or sweaters.
  • Have an Open Mind: You are coming to us for our expertise. While we deeply value your vision, be open to our suggestions. We might recommend a fabric that will perform better in your climate or a subtle design tweak that will be more flattering for your body type. Our greatest successes come from true collaboration.

Most importantly, just come ready to have a conversation. We'll guide you through every step, from the grand decisions down to the finest details.

How do I choose the right fabric for India's diverse climate?

This is a critical consideration for any gentleman in India, and it's where our expertise truly shines. The key is breathability and fabric weight. A beautiful heavy tweed that's perfect for London will be a disaster in Delhi's summer. We guide our clients through a curated selection specifically suited for our environment.

Here's a general guide to our recommendations:

  • Lightweight High-Twist Wools (Super 120s-150s): This is the workhorse of the sophisticated Indian wardrobe. Modern milling techniques create wools that are incredibly light, airy, and wrinkle-resistant. They breathe exceptionally well, making them comfortable even in air-conditioned offices during warmer months. Perfect for business suits that need to look sharp all day.
  • Linen and Linen Blends: The undisputed king of summer fabrics. Pure linen has a beautiful, characterful texture and is unmatched for breathability, making it ideal for daytime events, beach weddings, or a relaxed yet smart look. We also offer linen/wool/silk blends, which give you the coolness of linen but with better wrinkle resistance and a smoother drape.
  • Fresco Wool: Fresco is a type of wool with a high-twist, open-weave construction. The name literally means "fresh" in Italian. It feels crisp and dry to the touch and is phenomenally porous, allowing air to pass right through. It's perhaps the ultimate performance fabric for hot and humid climates.
  • Cotton and Seersucker: A fantastic choice for a more casual suit or blazer. A cotton suit in khaki or navy is a versatile staple. Seersucker, with its signature puckered texture, is designed to sit away from the skin, promoting air circulation and making it a classic choice for smart summer style.

During your consultation, we will discuss your specific needs and let you feel the different fabrics. We'll explain the properties of each so you can make an informed decision that balances aesthetics, comfort, and performance.

What is the typical price range for a suit?

At Elysian Threads, we view each garment not as a product with a fixed price tag, but as a project and an investment in your personal brand. Therefore, the final price is a reflection of the choices you make during our collaborative process. There is no "typical" price, as every commission is unique. However, the cost is primarily determined by three key factors:

  1. The Fabric: This is often the most significant variable. A suit made from a solid, reliable Super 120s wool from an excellent Indian or Italian mill will have a different price point than one crafted from a rare Super 200s wool, vicuña, or a complex cashmere/silk blend from a world-renowned mill like Loro Piana or Zegna. We offer a vast range of options to suit different budgets and desires.
  2. The Construction (Bespoke vs. MTM): As detailed earlier, the full bespoke process involves significantly more man-hours, from hand-drafting the pattern to the many hours of intricate hand-stitching (like hand-padded lapels and hand-sewn buttonholes). This intensive labour and artistry is reflected in the price compared to the more streamlined Made-to-Measure service.
  3. The Complexity of the Design: A classic two-piece business suit will be more straightforward to create than a three-piece suit with complex details, a patterned fabric that requires meticulous pattern-matching, or a ceremonial garment with extensive embroidery.

We believe in complete transparency. During your initial consultation, once we have an understanding of your needs and preferences, we will provide you with a clear and detailed estimate before any commitment is made. Think of it not as "buying a suit," but as commissioning a piece of wearable art, with the service, expertise, and multiple fittings all included in the final investment.

Can you replicate a suit from a picture?

This is a common and excellent question. The short answer is: we use pictures for inspiration, but we do not create exact replicas. And this is for your benefit.

When you bring us a photograph of a suit, it provides a fantastic visual language for our conversation. It helps us understand the silhouette you're drawn to, the lapel style you prefer, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. We will absolutely use these elements as our creative starting point.

However, our duty as bespoke tailors is not to simply copy, but to interpret and perfect. Here’s why a direct copy is often a disservice to the client:

  • Your Body is Unique: The suit in the photograph was made for the specific body of the person wearing it (who is often a professional model). A lapel that looks perfect on a 6'2" model may overwhelm the frame of someone who is 5'8". Our job is to take the *essence* of the style you like and adapt its proportions to be maximally flattering for *your* unique physique.
  • Fit is Paramount: A photograph cannot convey the intricate, three-dimensional fit of a garment. Our process of multiple fittings is designed to sculpt the suit to your body in a way that a picture never can.
  • Our House Style & Expertise: Every reputable tailoring house has a certain "house style" or philosophy. At Elysian Threads, this involves a commitment to a certain standard of construction, balance, and finishing. We will integrate your desired style elements within our framework of quality craftsmanship to ensure the final product is not only stylish but also impeccably made and durable.

So, please bring us your inspiration! We will then begin the exciting process of translating that vision into a superior garment that is designed and crafted exclusively for you.

What is your policy on alterations after the suit is completed?

Our relationship with our clients and their garments extends well beyond the final delivery. We stand by the fit and quality of our work, and we understand that bodies can change and fabrics can settle over time.

Our policy is designed to be fair and ensure your long-term satisfaction:

  • Initial Settling-In Period: We encourage you to wear your new suit a few times to allow the natural fibers to settle and drape to your body. We offer complimentary minor adjustments within the first three months of collection. This could include slight tweaks to the waist or sleeve length as the garment finds its final form on your body. This is part of our commitment to a perfect fit.
  • Significant Body Changes: We construct our garments with generous seam allowances, particularly in the side seams, seat, and waist of the trousers. This is done with the future in mind. If you experience minor weight gain or loss over the years, these allowances enable us to perform alterations to adjust the fit. These substantial alterations are a chargeable service, and the cost will depend on the extent of work required. We will always provide a quote before commencing any work.
  • Repairs & Maintenance: A well-loved suit will eventually show signs of wear. We offer a full repair service, from replacing linings and buttons to mending small tears. We see ourselves as the long-term custodians of your sartorial investments and are here to help you preserve them for years, or even decades, to come.

Essentially, when you commission a suit from Elysian Threads, you are entering into a long-term partnership. We are always here to advise on and assist with the ongoing care and maintenance of your wardrobe.

How should I care for my new bespoke suit?

A bespoke suit is a significant investment, and with proper care, it can provide you with many years of service and style. Treating your suit with respect is the key to its longevity. Mass-produced suits are often fused and can withstand harsh treatment; a finely crafted canvassed garment requires a more gentle approach.

Here are our essential care guidelines:

  • Rotate Your Suits: This is the single most important rule. Avoid wearing the same suit two days in a row. Giving it at least a day's rest allows the natural fibers (like wool) to breathe, shed wrinkles, and return to their natural shape.
  • Use a Proper Hanger: Never use a thin wire hanger. Invest in a quality wooden hanger with wide, curved shoulders that mimics the shape of your own shoulders. This will support the jacket's structure and prevent unsightly puckering or stretching. Trousers should be hung by the cuff or folded gently over the hanger bar.
  • Empty Your Pockets: Before hanging your suit, remove everything from the pockets (phone, keys, wallet). Leaving heavy items in the pockets will distort the fabric and can ruin the garment's silhouette over time.
  • Steaming, Not Ironing: A gentle steam is the best way to remove minor wrinkles from travel or a day's wear. Direct ironing can scorch or create a shine on fine wool. If you must iron, use a low heat setting and always place a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  • Brush, Don't Lint Roll: After wearing, use a soft, natural-bristle garment brush to remove dust, hair, and surface dirt. This is more gentle on the fabric than sticky lint rollers, which can leave a residue.
  • Dry Clean Sparingly: This may sound counterintuitive, but the harsh chemicals and high heat of dry cleaning are tough on natural fibers. Only dry clean your suit when it is genuinely dirty or stained, perhaps once or twice a year at most. For minor spots, spot-clean carefully with a damp cloth. Always use a reputable dry cleaner who understands fine tailoring.
